Anyone - from anywhere in the world - can be a part of this project. Each artist is sent the same blank canvas. A few important rules...
First, the canvas must be used in some way and your work must be done ON the canvas - no sending us back a blank or completely different canvas!
Second, the canvas must stay within its original dimensions.
Third, we are unable to accept canvases mailed back to us after the postmark date of August 10th. We’re working on a timeline and want to make sure these encyclopedias can be created and shipped to you by November 2018.
Lastly, make sure to fill out the Artist Card before sending your canvas back to us, as that ensures it will be delivered to another artist in our community!
We do our best to ship within one working week. We are a very small staff, so please bear with us. Feel free to reach out with any questions!
We ship via USPS to help lower shipping costs and to allow for free shipping to our domestic participants. That means, we do have a small % of orders that get lost in transit. We will happily resend your canvas at no cost to you after 2 weeks of ship date for domestic and 5 weeks after ship date for international.
Everything We Know - as a kickoff to this challenge, our artist community contributed 2,000 unique words that are meant to inspire and energize their fellow artists. Inside your box, you’ll receive a prompted word from one of the thousands of artists in our global community. If you would like to contribute more than one canvas, you will get a new prompted word for each!
VISUAL ENCYCLOPEDIA + SWAP
This community art project will culminate in a visual encyclopedia where your painting will be printed in a book showcasing the entire compilation of canvases sent back to us from participants of The Canvas Project. With no guidance but your single prompted words, this book will be minimally curated to display the distinct and intimate collection of all the little parts of life that make up Everything We Know.
Once your canvas is sent back to us, it will be a part of our weekend exhibition at Brooklyn Art Library (dates TBD). We will then add it to the visual encyclopedia and send it to the home of a fellow artist from The Canvas Project.
In Fall 2018, we will showcase all of the canvases from this project during a weekend exhibition at Brooklyn Art Library. Open to the public and dates are TBD!
WHEN YOU'RE DONE
Before sending your canvas back, there are a few key steps to follow:
Once completed, write your full name and prompted word (as stated on your ticket insert) anywhere on the back of your canvas.
Fill out your Artist Card in full and send it back with your canvas.
Complete the quick online registration form. This will ensure that we know who’s canvas is who’s and we’ll be able to swap yours with a fellow artist and showcase you in the final visual encyclopedia!
Please note that the canvases are tracked by their corresponding Artist Card and online registration form, NOT by who purchased the canvas. This allows for you to give this canvas as a gift to whomever you want!
We have a major respect for artist ownership. By submitting to the project, you still retain ownership of your work. You do grant a license to print your work in our visual encyclopedia, but we do our best to make sure you are always credited. We have NO plans to ever sell the original work, however, if that ever did come up, we MUST contact you with a responsible amount of time for you to respond. PLEASE REVIEW THE FULL TERMS HERE.
Please select yes or no to each option to customize your canvas. Please note, canvases will start shipping 2/10!
The preordered encyclopedia will be shipped once printed, and will come in the same package as the swapped canvas you will receive.
The supply pack includes two paint brushes of varying thickness, three 10 ml acrylic paint tubes, one pencil and a BAL pin or three special Canvas Project stickers.
